Here is a great and positive example of overcoming chronic pain, as told to Barb Berggoetz at the Indianapolis Star (http://indystar.com).
It’s the story of a person (it would have been nice if their name was included) who suffers from pain resulting from a herniated disc operation in 1978:
In my late 30s, my back started bothering me again. I developed chronic pain from degenerative disc disease, bone spurs and peripheral neuropathy in my leg. I had back surgery that removed scar tissue and bone spurs, opened nerve roots areas and repaired discs.
The patient started going to a multidisciplinary chronic pain management centre, and started seeing a psychiatrist, medical doctor and a physical therapist. They also started attending group sessions at the clinic.
After a short while, they started to notice a real difference in themselves, and their physical abilities and mental focus. Today, they are still living with their pain, but it’s not stopping them from cycling over 3,000 miles a year, and even working on a chronic pain stand-up comedy routine they are taking on the road.
It’s just one great example of a patient focused in the right ways and finding the help their need through multidisciplinary care.
