The study: A Comparison of Pain Control Between Occipital Nerve Block and Occipital Nerve Radiofrequency: A Retrospective Cohort Study, had Principle Investigator Allevio’s Dr. Rahul Pathak, and sub investigators Shadi Babazadeh, MD and Yeva Sahakyan, MD MPH
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the comparative effects of Occipital Nerve Block (ONB) and Occipital nerve Pulsed Radiofrequency (P-RF) for greater and lesser Occipital nerve and OBB+ P-RF ablation on patients with occipital neuralgia.
The Allevio team found, when looking at our data, that a combined greater and lesser pulsed radiofrquency ablation technique provides substantial benefit for patients in their ability to return to work and their reduction of narcotic consumption (i.e. reduction in opioid consumption).
This study is an important realization and development for those patients who would benefit from occipital nerve blocks, or who are being considered for one.
Radiofrquency is a tool used in pain management to help physicians heat a nerve up to a burning temperature, effectively shutting the nerve down from firing pain signals to the brain.
The esteemed Spine Intervention Society chose this important study to publish in their 2019 Annual Meeting Research Abstracts Review. This, we are very proud to say, was one of several articles published based on Allevio’s research in the last year.
