11 Home Remedies for #Migraine #Headaches

We recently came across this article on Foxnews.com and thought it was worth sharing. It’s based on an interview with Dr. Brian Grosberg, assistant professor of neurology and director of Inpatient Headache Program  from the Montefiore Headache Center in Bronx, N.Y.and, aside from pointing out that nearly 75% of all migraine suffers are women, offers some practical, at home advice to manage your migraine headaches:

  1. Drink Water – Dehydration can often cause headaches
  2. Drink Caffeine – In SOME CASES, caffeine can restrict blood vessels. In other cases it can have the opposite effect so please don’t try this if you are prone to headaches or other complications form caffeine.
  3. Try on a headband – sometimes a headband can help, and they have been used for thousands of years.
  4. Fish Oil – not an evidence-based recommendation but they feel this works for some people
  5. Peppermint Oil – Also not evidence–based, but has gotten good results from some of their patients.
  6. Ginger – Which has been known to reduce nausea
  7. Magnesium – “when taken in doses of 400 to 600 milligrams per day, magnesium is effective for menstrual-associated migraines and migraines associated with auras.”
  8. Vitamin B12 – Been shown to prevent migraines in some patients, but may make you urinate more.
  9. CoEnzymeQ10 – A potentially expensive medication that has been shown to reduce migraines.
  10. Butterbur – “Butterbur is a plant grown in Germany, and extensive studies have proven that in pill form, it is very effective in treating migraine pain and asthma, as well as alleviate upset stomachs.”
  11. Hot and Cold Compresses – Not sure why it works but many people swear it helps.
