What is Pain Management?
Pain management is a medical specialty that employs a multi-disciplinary technique to treat pain. It can include a combination of various medical therapies, such as physical therapy, massage therapy, nerve blocks, medications, and more.
Whether chronic or acute, pain can have a debilitating effect on your body and mind. The goal of pain management is to either eliminate pain or, if that’s not possible, make it manageable and improve your quality of life.
Types of Pain
While there many types of pain, and even more causes of pain, there are two broad categories:
Acute Pain:
Acute pain comes on suddenly and is typically short-lived. It is usually due to physical injury or short-term illness. Examples include pain due to a broken bone, burns, dental work, surgery, an infection, or a fall.
Chronic Pain:
Chronic pain is experienced long-term (greater than 3 to 6 months). In most cases, it stems from an incurable underlying condition, a condition with no effective treatment, or one that takes a long time to treat. In other cases, the cause of the pain may be unknown. Migraines, arthritis, and degenerative diseases are all examples of conditions that lead to chronic pain.
Types of Specialists
Pain management specialists are doctors who have a high level of training, coupled with experience in the treatment and management of pain. They typically can:
– Perform tests to diagnose chronic pain
– Prescribe and manage pain medications
– Perform spinal injections and nerve blocks
– Coordinate physical therapy
– Manage rehabilitation
Pain management specialists undergo extensive education along with comprehensive training in the area of pain management. After completing medical school, they complete additional residencies, fellowship training, and internships specific to pain treatment. A pain management specialist is more adept than a general physician in identifying the exact type of pain a patient has and the treatment modality to be followed.
The ideal type of specialist to consult depends on the kind of pain you are facing. For example, if you are suffering from chronic migraines, then a neurologist who has experience in pain management may be a good option.
